Luxury outdoor living space in Coto de Caza designed by Kurt Karl

The Person Behind the Work

Over 35 years of designing, building, and caring for South Orange County's finest outdoor spaces.

This was never just a business. It started as a love for being outdoors, working with the land, and making something beautiful out of an empty yard.

That feeling has driven every project for over three decades. It still does today.

Kurt Karl, founder and lead designer of Kurt Karl Designs

Thirty-Five Years in the Dirt

Kurt started working in landscapes before most people had the internet. He learned the trade hands-on: grading soil, setting stone, planting trees that are now taller than the homes they shade. Over the years, that hands-on knowledge became the foundation for a design philosophy rooted in what actually works.

Today, Kurt Karl Designs is one of the most respected luxury landscape firms in South Orange County. But it still operates the same way it always has: one client at a time, with Kurt personally involved from first sketch to final walkthrough.

"Every landscape should tell a story. One that reflects how the homeowner wants to live, entertain, and find a little peace at the end of the day."

Based between San Clemente and Coto de Caza, Kurt and his team serve homeowners from Newport Beach to Dana Point, creating outdoor spaces that feel like they have always belonged to the property.

What We Believe

Three principles that shape every project we take on.

01

Design With Intention

A great landscape feels inevitable, like it has always been there. That does not happen by accident. It comes from listening closely to how a family lives, studying the natural character of the site, and making every design decision serve a purpose. No filler. No fluff. Just spaces that work.

02

Build With Precision

The difference between good and exceptional lives in the details. The way a stone cap meets a wall. The slope of a drainage channel. The depth of a planting bed. We hold ourselves to the kind of standards that most people will never notice, and that is exactly the point. It just feels right.

03

Stay For the Long Run

Some of our clients have been with us for twenty years or more. That is the kind of relationship we value. We do not disappear after the final walkthrough. We stick around because landscapes are living things, and the best ones only get better with time and care.
